OCD Treatment

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can be exhausting and isolating. Our team includes specialists trained at top national OCD treatment programs, offering gold-standard ERP therapy for children, teens, and adults.

Understanding OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is driven by a cycle of intrusive, unwanted thoughts — called obsessions — and the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals — called compulsions — that a person feels compelled to perform in order to reduce the distress those thoughts create. OCD is not about being neat or organized. The obsessions can involve fears of contamination, harm to loved ones, disturbing images, doubts about morality, or an overwhelming need for things to feel "just right." The compulsions that follow — checking, washing, counting, reassurance-seeking, or silent mental reviewing — provide only temporary relief before the cycle starts again.

OCD is one of the most widely misunderstood mental health conditions. Many people in the Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton, and Johns Creek area live with OCD for years before receiving an accurate diagnosis because their symptoms do not match common stereotypes. OCD can look like a child who asks the same question dozens of times a day, a teen who spends hours on homework because nothing feels "right," or an adult who avoids driving for fear of having caused an accident. Because the condition often carries shame and secrecy, individuals and families may not realize that what they are experiencing has a name and a well-established treatment path.

Without specialized treatment, OCD tends to consume increasing amounts of time and energy. Rituals that once took minutes can expand to fill hours of the day, making it difficult to attend school, maintain work responsibilities, or enjoy time with family. OCD can also pull loved ones into the cycle through accommodation — when family members change their own behavior to help the person avoid distress — which, while well-intentioned, often reinforces the disorder.

The most encouraging news about OCD is that Exposure and Response Prevention, the gold-standard treatment, is highly effective. ERP works by gradually helping individuals face their feared thoughts and situations without performing compulsions, allowing the brain to learn that the anxiety will decrease on its own. Our therapists have received specialized training at leading OCD treatment programs and bring that expertise to every client. With the right support, people with OCD can reclaim their time, their confidence, and their daily lives.

How We Treat OCD

OCD requires specialized treatment — well-meaning general therapy can sometimes make symptoms worse if it focuses on reassurance rather than building tolerance for uncertainty. Our therapists have advanced training in Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the evidence-based approach with the strongest track record for OCD. We also understand that starting ERP can feel intimidating, which is why we move at your pace and never force you into exposures you're not ready for.

Treatment at our practice also addresses the family dynamics that often develop around OCD. When a loved one has OCD, family members frequently become caught up in accommodation patterns — performing rituals, providing reassurance, or rearranging routines to reduce the person's distress. While these responses come from a place of love, they inadvertently strengthen the OCD cycle. We work with families to shift these patterns gradually and compassionately.

ERP

Exposure and Response Prevention is the gold-standard treatment for OCD. Through gradual exposure to obsessive triggers with prevention of compulsive responses, you learn to tolerate uncertainty and break the OCD cycle.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps you understand the OCD cycle and build cognitive flexibility, allowing you to recognize intrusive thoughts for what they are without giving them power over your actions.

SPACE

Supporting Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions is a Yale-developed parent training program that helps families reduce accommodation of OCD behaviors and support their child's recovery.
